Dollar-Cost Averaging Into Bitcoin: A Beginner's Monthly Plan

2026-03-27 ยท Bitcoin Investing News

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is one of the most commonly recommended entry strategies for new Bitcoin investors specifically because it removes the pressure of trying to time a notoriously volatile market. Here's a practical framework for setting one up.

Step 1: Decide on an amount you can hold through a large drawdown

Because Bitcoin has historically experienced drawdowns exceeding 70% from cycle peaks, a foundational DCA principle is to only commit money you could genuinely afford to see lose significant value for an extended period without it affecting your financial stability or forcing you to sell at a loss.

Step 2: Pick a consistent interval

IntervalTradeoff
WeeklySmoother average price, more frequent small transactions (and potentially more fees, depending on platform)
MonthlyThe most common approach; aligns naturally with paycheck cycles
QuarterlyFewer transactions, but more exposure to any single period's price swings

Step 3: Automate it

Most major exchanges and several dedicated apps offer recurring buy features that automatically purchase a fixed dollar amount on a set schedule. Automation removes the emotional decision-making that often leads investors to pause purchases during downturns โ€” historically often the worst time to stop buying, and the best time (in hindsight) to continue.

Step 4: Decide on a storage plan in advance

As your DCA position grows, consider your custody plan โ€” whether that's continuing to hold on the exchange, moving to a hardware wallet, or some hybrid approach โ€” before it becomes a large enough amount that a security mistake would be costly. See our guide on cold storage vs. hot wallets for more detail.

This article is educational and does not constitute personalized financial advice. Any DCA plan should be sized according to your own financial circumstances and risk tolerance.
